Allied Health Partnerships at South Coogee

At South Coogee Primary School, we are committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to achieve their best — academically, socially, and emotionally. Through use of our student centred funding our ongoing partnerships with allied health professionals provide valuable, evidence-based support to enhance student development in the areas of speech, language, literacy, fine motor skills, and self-regulation.

Through collaborations with Fremantle Speech Pathology, Down South Therapy, and Curtin University, students benefit from tailored programs that align with Department of Education priorities for inclusion and wellbeing. These partnerships reflect our strong commitment to early intervention and proactive support for all learners.

Speech Pathology Program

South Coogee Primary School has partnered with Fremantle Speech Pathology Services (FSPS) and Curtin University to deliver a high-quality Speech Pathology program three days per week.

Under the supervision of qualified Speech Pathologists, Speech Pathology students work closely with our staff and families to assess and support children experiencing challenges with:

Speech sound development
Oral language and communication skills
Pre-literacy and literacy development
Speech fluency

All Kindergarten and Pre-primary students participate in screening each year to identify developmental needs early and to provide early intervention which research has shown is when it is most effective.

Students from Year 1 to Year 6 may also be referred by their teacher for further assessment and individualised support. Intervention sessions are designed to build confidence and skills through engaging, play-based, and structured learning experiences.

Delivery of the program is aligned with Curtin University placement schedules and WA school term dates. As the program is supported by Speech Pathology student placements, availability may vary from year to year.

This long-standing partnership ensures that our youngest learners receive timely early intervention through targeted support — building a strong foundation for communication and literacy success.

Occupational Therapy Program

In partnership with Down South Therapy and Curtin University, South Coogee Primary School offers Occupational Therapy (OT) support throughout the year.

Occupational Therapy supports students to engage confidently and independently in their school life. Under the supervision of qualified Occupational Therapists, final-year OT students assess and support children in areas such as:

Fine motor and handwriting development
Sensory processing and regulation for learning and wellbeing
Social communication and emotional awareness
Attention, engagement, and participation in learning
Everyday self-care skills, such as dressing, eating, and toileting

Students are offered Occupational Therapy support based on identified needs and service availability. Access to the program is aligned with Curtin University placement schedules and WA school term dates.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 can be referred by their classroom teacher for assessment and intervention. Families receive feedback outlining the student’s strengths, goals, and progress, and support may continue through individual or small-group sessions.
