Butterfly Garden Project

Nurturing Nature, Inspiring Young Minds

South Coogee Primary School proudly led the Butterfly Garden Project, a collaborative initiative with schools across the Cities of Cockburn and Fremantle to create native habitats supporting local butterfly populations

Launched in 2019, the project brought science, sustainability, and creativity together through hands-on STEM learning. Each school established a butterfly-host garden, planting native species to form a habitat corridor that encourages biodiversity and environmental awareness.

Lynette Beard, Principal of South Coogee Primary school explained at the time, “the Butterfly Garden Project offers purposeful STEM-based learning to the students and produces outcomes that will benefit the broader Cockburn and Fremantle communities.”

The Butterfly Garden became a living classroom where students across the Cockburn and Fremantle schools explored life cycles, ecosystems, and their role in caring for the environment.

This project exemplifies South Coogee’s commitment to fostering creative, connected, and environmentally conscious learners — where learning extends beyond the classroom and makes a lasting difference to the community.
