The Arts

At South Coogee Primary School, we believe The Arts are essential to a well-rounded education, nurturing creativity, confidence, and imagination. As one of the eight Australian Curriculum learning areas, The Arts encompass Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Dance, and Media Arts, giving students multiple pathways to express themselves and connect with others.

Through participation in The Arts, students learn to Achieve, Inspire, and Respect — our school’s AIR values — by engaging collaboratively and creatively, valuing diverse perspectives, and celebrating the joy of learning through artistic expression.

A Whole - School Approach to the Arts

Our Arts Learning Committee works together to design authentic and inspiring learning experiences, embedding annual incursions and excursions that connect classroom learning to the wider world of The Arts.

Visual Arts

Our specialist Visual Arts program, provides every student from Pre-primary to Year 6 with the opportunity to explore, create, and experiment with a range of media and techniques. Students are inspired by local, historical, and contemporary artists, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and develop an appreciation for sustainability by reusing and recycling materials in their creations.

Large-scale, whole-school projects are a signature feature of our program, enhancing both our campus and community pride. Installations, such as mosaics depicting each learning area and the Butterfly Life Cycle demonstrate the creativity and collaboration that make South Coogee such a vibrant learning environment.

Our partnership with the City of Cockburn and local organisations continues to support artistic initiatives that bring colour and joy to our school grounds. Student artwork is also proudly displayed in the front office, library, classrooms, and assemblies, as well as at community events and exhibitions such as the Cockburn Community Cultural Council Art Exhibition.

Performing Arts

The Performing Arts program provides students with opportunities to build confidence, teamwork, and self-expression through music, drama, and dance.

Choir: Open to all interested students K-6, the South Coogee Choir performs at key school events such as ANZAC Day, assemblies, and end-of-year celebrations. The choir performs at WAGSM (WA Government Schools Music) either at Crown Theatre or Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. Students rehearse weekly, developing vocal technique, performance skills, and a love for singing together.
Music and Drama: Students in Pre-primary to Year 4 participate in specialist-led Music and Drama lessons throughout the year. In Years 5 and 6, students engage in extended Drama programs that develop public speaking, improvisation, and stage performance skills.

Each year, the Edu-Dance program for Years 2, 4, and 6 brings the whole community together in a dynamic celebration of movement, music, and self-expression — a highlight for students, staff, and families alike.

Community and Collaboration

South Coogee Primary School proudly collaborates with local artists, arts organisations, and community partners to expand students’ creative horizons. Our students have participated in unique opportunities such as the WA Ballet Swan Education Project, engaging in ballet, contemporary dance, mindfulness, Noongar art and language, and live performances at His Majesty’s Theatre.

These experiences build confidence, cultural understanding, and a deep appreciation for the Arts as a means of storytelling and connection.
