Our School Chaplain

South Coogee Primary School is proud to partner with YouthCARE to provide chaplaincy services that support the wellbeing of our students and strengthen our school community. Our chaplain works alongside staff and families to build positive relationships, offer a listening ear, and help students navigate social and emotional challenges. This partnership reflects our commitment to creating a caring, connected environment where every child feels supported to thrive. Below are some frequently asked questions:

What does a Chaplain do?

Chaplains support the social, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing of students and the broader school community. Their role is to provide a caring presence, a listening ear, and practical support to help students achieve their potential, both academically and in their social and family lives.

At South Coogee Primary School, the chaplain supports the school breakfast program, co-facilitates small group learning under the guidance of classroom teachers and runs the school Lego Club during recess and lunch breaks. The chaplain may also run targeted programs that build resilience, support students through grief and loss, and promote emotional wellbeing.

Our chaplain is available as a safe and approachable adult before school and during break times, giving students opportunities to self-refer whenever they would like someone to talk to.

This service reflects our commitment to ensuring every child feels supported, connected, and understood.

Do Chaplains have to be qualified?

Yes. Chaplains must have a minimum Cert IV qualification in youth work or other relevant area.

Are you Christian? Do you talk to my children about God?

A chaplain’s focus is on the needs of the students. Chaplains do not  talk to students about spirituality unless the student brings it up. While chaplaincy is a Christian initiative, it respects the rights of all belief systems.

Who refers students to the Chaplain?

Referrals to the chaplain can be made by the classroom teacher in consultation with the managing Associate Principal.

Chaplaincy operates on an opt-out basis. If you would not like the Chaplain to speak to your child, please email the front office.
