Student Health Information

Prescribed medication at school

It is a requirement from the Department of Education for administration of any prescribed medication our school requires written authority from parents/carers. This authority can be provided by completing an Administration of Medication form.

Note:

  • The medication must be clearly labelled with the child’s name and provided in packaging from the pharmacy or the manufacturer.
  • Documentation must be signed and dated by a parent or carer and provided to the school with the medication.

Crunch and Sip

At South Coogee, we encourage healthy habits to support focus, learning and wellbeing. Each day, students participate in Crunch & Sip — a short break during class time to enjoy a healthy snack and a drink of water.

To ensure this time remains quick, nutritious and learning-focused, please remember:

What to pack

  • Fresh fruit or vegetables only
(e.g. apple slices, berries, carrot sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes)

  • Water in a drink bottle

What to avoid

  • Packaged snacks

  • Foods high in sugar, salt, or processing

  • Juice or flavoured drinks

Helpful tips

  • Send fruit or vegetables pre-cut and ready to eat

  • Choose options that are easy for your child to manage independently

  • Daily water bottles help keep children hydrated and ready to learn

Thank you for your continued support in promoting healthy routines at school. If you have any questions, please chat with your child’s teacher.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club is run collaboratively by the school chaplain, the AIEO (Aboriginal Islander Education Officer),  parent volunteers and breakfast is available for any of our students to access a healthy breakfast. Students attending learn how to interact with others while having a meal, what comprises a ‘healthy breakfast’, how to prepare it to set themselves up for a productive day of learning and then how to clean up after themselves.

The school is supported through healthy breakfast options and fresh fruit supplied by Foodbank and OzHarvest.

We are grateful that the Department of Education assists with costs.

Allergy Aware School

We are an Asthma Friendly School as well as being Allergy Aware. We have students in our school with nut allergies, in some cases the allergies are severe. To protect these students we ask all families to refrain from bringing products that contain traces of nuts to school.

Students with Anaphylaxis or suffer Allergic Reactions, Asthma or any medical conditions will need to come to the front office to complete the necessary paperwork. Please note that this paperwork must be updated each year. The office staff will contact you when this paperwork is due to be updated.

School Health Checks

When enrolling we ask parents to complete a medical card, or if transferring from another West Australian State School, have it sent on. If you have any medical concerns you would like our school nurse to address please contact our front office.

Routine Screening

This is done for all children at these Year levels and is standard across Western Australia;

  • Pre Primary – Immunisations (to be notified of arrangements)
  • Pre-Primary – Vision and Hearing and General Health
  • Year 1 – Vision and Hearing for those who didn’t get this done in Pre Primary

Head Lice

Head Lice is a common occurrence in schools. If there is a child in your child’s classroom who we find has head lice we will send a note home to advise you. In this case, we will ask you to check your child’s hair and treat it that evening if necessary.

If you find headlice, the cheapest and most effective treatment is conditioner. The process is covered in the note displayed on the board near the front office or you can find all the information online on the Department of Health’s, Headlice Fact Sheet.

Your child may return to school once all live head lice have been treated. Please continue treatment over the following 10 days to ensure that all eggs and hatchlings have been removed.
