Indonesian

In 2022 the Indonesian language program was available to all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6. All year levels had access to a specialist language program that focused on developing skills for new and continuing learners which was rich in culture.

Across the year the Indonesian program focused on looking at the learner from the context of self to their part in their family or community, continually expanding their language skills through meaningful and achievable activities.

Students participated in several cultural activities within the classroom and across the school which enhanced their understanding of Indonesian and the importance of languages to culture.

This year students were able to participate in cooking classes and learnt games, songs and dance particular to Indonesian culture.

A bilingual puppet production of The Jungle Book was provided as an incursion and enjoyed by Year 1-6 students.

South Coogee Primary School has also gained approval to take part in the Adopt-A-School program run alongside schools in Bali, with our Year 4 students being the first to write letters to SD Kutuh 2 late in the year.

This year South Coogee Primary School used money from a Landcare Grant to enrich the Bush Tucker garden and plant fruit trees, herbs and vegetables commonly found in Indonesia around the Bush Tucker garden as well as throughout the school. These were then used extensively to discuss the environment with the Junior Primary classes, with the produce being used in cooking classes with the senior primary students.

The Indonesian program looked to incorporate cross-curricular priorities through consultation with classroom and other specialist teachers. This year the Language focus was on the Sustainable Development Goals in the first term and further classroom language learning linked in with classroom topics for the whole school STEM project in Term 3.

South Coogee Primary School was able to continue to access the ELLA apps that were introduced on a trial basis in previous years. This was well utilised by classroom teachers to support and extend student learning outside of the Language classroom.

We are proud of the multicultural make-up of our school.
